1995 - Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Joe Montana announces his retirement from football. He played two seasons with the Chiefs and was with the San Francisco 49ers for 14 years.

1900 - Canadian Jim Caffrey wins the fourth annual Boston Marathon with a time of 2:39:44.4. Caffrey won again a year later with a time of 2:29:23.6.

1966 - Roberta Bignay becomes the first women to run in the Boston Marathon while Kenji Kimihara of Japan won the 70th Boston Marathon.

1996 - The Texas Rangers scored 16 runs in the eighth inning against the Baltimore Orioles in a Major League Baseball game.

1986 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls scores a National Basketball Association playoff record 63 points in a game.

2008 - Danica Patrick becomes the first female driver to win an Indy car race. She placed first in the Indy Japan 300.

1948 - The Baltimore Bullets beat the Philadelphia Warriors four games to two to win the second NBA championship.

1994 - Eddie Murray sets an MLB record with a home run from both sides of the plate in 11 career games. Murray's switch hitting record has since been beat by Mark Texeria.

1914 - Babe Ruth makes his professional pitching debut and allows six hits while earning the 6-0 win.

1988 - New Jersey Devil Patrik Sundstrom ties a National Hockey League record with eight points (three goals and five assists) in a playoff game. The Devils beat the Washington Capitals 10-4.

April 23

1939 - Boston Red Sox Ted Williams hits his first career home run. He finished with 521 career homers.

1954 - Hank Aaron hits his first of 755 career home runs as a professional.

April 24

1974 - The National Football League grants Tampa Bay with Buccaneers franchise.

1978 - Angels pitcher Nolan Ryan strikes out 15 Mariners batters. It was the 20th time in his career he struck out 15 or more batters in an MLB game.
