1959 - Lee Petty wins the first Daytona 500 auto race by a photo finish in his 1959 Oldsmobile Dynamic.
1962 - Wilt Chamberlain sets a National Basketball Association record with 34 straight free throws.
1984 - Brothers Anton and Peter Stastny record eight points each in a game for the Quebec Nordiques in the National Hockey League. Broher Marian also played on the team that season.

1991 - North Carolina becomes the first National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball program to win 1,500 games.
1993 - The Sacramento Gold Miners are admitted to the Canadian Football League as the ninth franchise in the league and first America-based team.

1968 - Garry Unger suits up for the Toronto Maple Leafs and goes on to set an NHL record for 914 consecutive games played. The streak ended Dec. 21, 1979, but has since been passed by Doug Jarvis.
1987 - Los Angeles Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scores his 36,000th point in the NBA. He finished his career with 38,387, an NBA record.

1941 - The NHL's Boston Bruins set a league record of 23 consecutive games without a loss. The Bruins record was 15-0-8.
1991 - The CFL's Toronto Argonauts are purchased by Wayne Gretzky, Bruce McNall and John Candy.

1935 - The New York Yankees release Babe Ruth. He later signs with the Boston Braves. The Braves went on to a 38-115 season, the third worst in baseball history.
1981 - The Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars set a record for most penalized game. The teams combined for 84 infractions and nearly 400 penalty minutes.
2013 - Battlefords North Stars forward Braeden Johnson of Saskatoon turns 21.

1927 - Eight golfers from South Carolina were arrested after golfing on a Sunday at their local course for violating the Sabbath.
1992 - Tiger Woods becomes the youngest golfer in the Professional Golf Association in 35 years at the age of 16.

1940 - The first televised basketball game is played between the University of Pittsburgh and Fordham University from Madison Square Garden. The final score was 50-37.
1998 - Mark Messier becomes the fourth NHLer to reach 1,600 points. He did so as a member of the Vancouver Canucks. Messier finished his career with 1,887.
