1989 - Ron Hextall of the Philadelphia Flyers becomes the first National Hockey League goaltender to score a playoff goal.

April 12

1877 - Alexander Tyng is the first professional baseball catcher to wear a mask, which was modified from a fencing mask by Fred Thayer.

1942 - Byron Nelson wins the ninth Golf Masters Championship, his second Masters Championship. Eleven years later Sam Snead wins his second of three Masters.

April 13

1963 - Pete Rose triples for his first major league base hit. Twenty-one years to the day he becomes the first national league batter to have 4,000 hits in a career.

1997 - At the age of 21 Tiger Woods wins the Masters Championship, his first of four titles. Woods shot a record -18 and claimed $486,000.

1997 - The Hartford Whalers play their final NHL game before relocating to Carolina.

1925 - The first regular season MLB game is broadcasted from Chicago.

1968 - The first National Basketball Association game is played at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Knicks beat the San Diego Clippers.

1969 - The first MLB game played outside the United States in played in Montreal at Jarry Park Stadium.

April 15

1947 - Jackie Robinson suits up with the Brooklyn Dodgers and breaks the colour barrier in Major League Baseball. Two days later he bunts for his first career hit.

1968 - The Houston Astros and New York Mets play an incredible 24-inning game. The Astros scored the only run of the game, unearned in the bottom of the 24th. Two other MLB games have went 24 innings while two ended after 25 innings and the longest game is recorded at 26, before being called due to darkness.

April 16

1987 - Michael Jordan becomes the second NBA player to score 3,000 points in a season. Wilt Chamberlain was the only other player to reach the mark. He did it three times including a league record 4,029.

1991 - The St. Louis Blues become the eighth NHL team in the league's history to comeback from a 3-1 deficit, as they beat Detroit 3-2 in game seven.

April 17

1933 - The Chicago Bears win their first National Football League game 23-21 over the New York Giants.

1951 - New York Yankees Mickey Mantel plays in his first MBL game and goes 1/4. Two years later at Griffith Stadium in Washington, DC Mantel hits a home run estimated at 565 feet.

1983 - Nolan Ryan strikes out his 3,500th career MLB batter.
