St. Walburg, Edam sweep NSRHL first round series; All-Stars announced

The St. Walburg Eagles and Edam 3 Stars advanced to the second round of the NSRHL playoffs by sweeping their respective best-of-three first round series.

The St. Walburg Eagles and Edam 3 Stars advanced to the second round of the NSRHL playoffs by sweeping their respective best-of-three first round series.

The 3 Stars began their series with a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over the Maidstone Jets in Edam. The Jets led 3-1 after two periods, but Edam scored four unanswered goals in the third to secure the win. Damon Schaffer led the way for the 3 Stars with two goals. Geordy Gabruck, Ryan Roach and Mitch Wall also scored for Edam. Andrew De Gruchy, Rory Gregoire and Tyler Johnston found the back of the net for Maidstone.

In game two, Edam scored twice in the first period and did not look back as the 3 Stars downed the Jets 4-1 in Maidstone. Wall, Brody Roach, Keegan Bourelle and Joel Blaquiere each lit the lamp for the 3 Stars. Gregoire added the lone goal for the Jets.

St. Walburg also had to come from behind to win game one of their first round series. Trailing 3-2 after two, the Eagles scored four times in the third period to beat the Turtleford Tigers 6-3 in St. Walburg. Brady Zerr had two goals and three assists in the Eagles' win. Jordan Fuder and Brad Gehl each scored twice for St. Walburg. Justin Hougham, Zack Macnab and Mitch Perkins were Turtleford's goal scorers.

The Eagles ran away with game two, coasting to a 7-1 victory over the Tigers in Turtleford. St. Walburg was up 2-0 after the first period and scored four more times in the second. Darren Delainey led the charge for St. Walburg with two goals in the game. Gehl, Travis Nasby, Scott Thompson, Sheldon Williamson and Nick Wourms also found the back of the net for the Eagles. Gareth Matevenko scored Turtleford's only goal.

In the second round, Edam will face the defending league champion Wilkie Outlaws. St. Walburg meets the Meadow Lake Stampeders in a battle of the second and third place teams in the regular season.

The NSRHL also announced their all-star teams for the 2013-14 season. The first team all-stars were Eagles goaltender Bryan Bridges, Outlaws defencemen Derek Keller and Will Rathje, Stampeders left winger DJ King, Eagles centre Trevor Bailey and Outlaws right winger Rick Cey.

The second team all-stars were 3 Stars goaltender Quinton Gauthier, Eagles defencemen Brent Wilson and Taylor Thiessen, 3 Stars left winger Mitch Wall, Outlaws centre Kyle Wagner, Eagles right winger Brady Zerr and Stampeders right winger Jamie Jeannotte.
