Along with the exciting action on the ice, there was another reason the Mac's Tournament in Calgary was a highlight for Battlefords Midget Stars defenceman Maxim Powiada.
Powiada was one of eight hockey players to earn a scholarship from the Mac's Tournament, as five boys and three girls earned $1,500 scholarships each.
The process included an essay submitted by the individuals before the tournament, then they were interviewed and finally the award winners were announced in Calgary.
Powiada played with Prince Albert last season before being released and picked up by the Stars.
Powiada has played 18 regular season games with the Stars this season and has three goals and four assists with 12 penalty minutes.
The Saskatoon-born defenceman is in his final season of midget hockey.
The Vancouver NW Giants beat the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes in the Mac's championship while the Edmonton Thunder beat the Saskatoon Stars on the female side.
