The Battlefords Midget Stars earned their first pre-season win in Saskatoon, thanks in large part to the goaltending duo.
The Stars faced the Blazers Friday and Ryan Rewerts and Rylan Toth split time in the net for the Stars.
Rewerts stopped 16 of 17 shots for the win while Toth made 17 saves on 19 shots.
The Stars' led 2-1 after the first period after Mark Ganter scored from Logan Nachtegaele two minutes in. Troy Gerein also scored on a power play unassisted in the first frame.
The Stars scored three straight goals in the first half of the second period to increase their lead. Gerein scored from Brian Hillis and Connor Sych. Later, it was Spencer Bast scoring unassisted on a power play. Defenceman Robin Yew capped off the second period offence with a shorthanded goal with the assist going to his twin Regan.
The Stars led 5-2 heading into the third period and were able to trade goals in the third period to earn the win.
Regan Yew scored his second of the game unassisted while the Blazers added their second power play goal of the game to finish the game's scoring.
Gerein, the Wilkie product and former AA Bantam Baron, was named the Stars' player of the game Friday.
The Stars were outshot 36-28 in the game and were 2/7 on the power play while the Blazers were 2/8 with the man advantage and had one shorthanded goal to go along with the power play tallies.
As coach Martin Smith and his staff continue to trim down the roster, the exhibition season continues with the Stars in playing Beardy's Wednesday at the Willow Cree Memorial Sport Centre.
The Stars will be back on home ice Thursday against the Blazers. The final exhibition game for the Stars will be Sept. 25 in Saskatoon against the Contacts.
