Strong goaltending by Battlefords Midget Stars' goalie Rylan Toth was the backbone to the Stars earning their first point of the season.
The Stars hosted Regina Saturday and Sunday at the Civic Centre, as they started the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League season and Toth surrendered four goals in two games, making 63 saves.
Toth and the Stars played to a 1-1 tie Friday. Regan Yew was the lone goal scorer for the home team. Troy Gerein and Jaiden Focht assisted on Yew's first-period goal, which tied the game.
Sunday, it was a penalty filled game, especially in the second period, as 32 penalty minutes and a game misconduct were handed out in the middle frame between the two teams.
The Stars' trailed 1-0 after the first, and 2-0 after the second, as both Regina goals came on the power play.
In the third, Yew scored his second of the season from Spencer Bast and Austin Duzan on a power play to make it 2-1. The Pat Canadians scored later in the third to secure the 3-1 win.
Regina had 11 power plays Sunday and finished the weekend 3/15 with the man advantage. The Stars were 0/5 Saturday and finished the weekend 1/20 on the power play.
It was a bit of a scrambled effort at times, but for a new coaching staff and new roster with 13 of the 19 players new to the league it was a good way to open the season for the Stars. They have to be happy with the effort they showed on the weekend and have a structure to build on.
Next up is a weekend road trip to Yorkton to take on the Harvest Saturday and Sunday. The Stars return to home ice Oct. 13 and 14 against Moose Jaw.
