Stars run into wall in Humboldt, win streak ends

Riley Kieser (25) of the Humboldt Broncos moves his skate out of the way to try and get a handle on the puck, while Battlefords North Stars goaltender Conner Creech has the same idea. The two teams faced off in Humboldt December 11, and the Broncos skated away with a 5-0 win.

The Humboldt Broncos put an abrupt end to the Battlefords North Stars' 13-game winning streak by pounding them 5-0 in front of a crowd of 600 at the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt on December 11.
Players and officials both had a hard time staying on their skates in the game - there was an unusual number of falls all over the ice over the three periods - but that didn't seem to phase the home team.
The Broncos were able to score on pretty much their first run at the Stars' net. Matt Glowa snuck a shot past netminder Conner Creech at 1:44 of the first, assisted by John Lawrence and Robbie Ciolfi.
For the rest of the period, the Stars came on strong, but were unable to get by hot Bronco goaltender Deven Dubyk. That stayed true for the rest of the game, as well.
Humboldt got their second goal of the night just 52 seconds into the second period. Glowa got the power-play goal, his second of the night, again assisted by Ciolfi and Lawrence.
Andrew Johnston made it a 3-0 game for Humboldt with a goal at 12:04 of the second, assisted by Mathew Backhouse and Taylor Duzan.
Then early in the third, Backhouse got a goal of his own on a power play at 5:48, assisted by Ciolfi.
Duzan's goal at 13:29 of the period, assisted by Taylor Johnson, rounded out scoring for the game, and officially ended one of the SJHL's most impressive winning streaks in recent memory - the Stars had not lost a game since November 8 - and giving Humboldt its fifth win in a row.
Dubyk stopped all 28 shots levelled at his net, while Creech let in five of the 35 shots sent his way.
Penalties were abundant in this contest, both minor and major.
At the end of the first period, Star Jared Samborski got a five-minute major and a game misconduct for checking from behind. And at 13:32 of the second, Bronco Adam Antkowiak got a game misconduct and a two-minute minor for roughing after the whistle.
The first fight didn't break out until 11:06 of the third, when Jake Daughtry of the Stars dropped gloves with Josh Roach of the Broncos. Both were given five minutes for fighting and a game misconduct.
Yet another Star was ejected from the game before the 60 minutes of play were up. Roger Tagoona got a roughing after the whistle minor at 15:32 of the third, along with a game misconduct.
The Broncos once again did well on the power play, going two for six, while the Stars were zero for five.
All three stars of the game were Broncos - Dubyk, Glowa and Lawrence.
Unfortunately, the morning after the game, Dubyk left Humboldt, called up to play for the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League.
That left Bronco head coach Dean Brockman looking for a new goaltender this week.
