The Battlefords Midget Stars were doing some major housing cleaning on the weekend, not with their personnel or roster, but on the ice, as they earned their first weekend sweep since Jan. 15 and 16 of 2011.
The Stars were in Swift Current and won both games against the Legionnaires moving them to 4-1-0-1 for the month of November. The two wins, 5-2 and 4-3 in overtime, helped the Stars jump back in front of Swift Current in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League standings and into seventh place with a 7-6-2-1 record.
The Stars had some solid goaltending from Ryan Rewerts Saturday, and eventually grabbed a 4-0 lead. Austin Duzan, the Stars' player of the game, started the scoring in the first period with his third goal of the season. Spencer Bast scored his fourth of the season shortly after and the Stars led 2-0 after 20 minutes despite being outshot.
Regan Yew increased the Stars' lead early in the second period with his ninth goal. Later in the second, Duzan scored a power play goal to put the Stars in complete control.
Swift Current added a power play goal in the second period and the teams traded goals in the third period including an empty net goal from Kent Walchuk for his first goal as a Star.
Ashton Clark, Josh Bly, Ryan Frehlick, Braden Lacoursiere and Bast had assists for the Stars Saturday.
Rewerts made 26 saves for his fifth win of the season.
Sunday, the Stars had Rylan Toth in net and he faced 37 shots and helped the Stars to an overtime win.
The game was close all the way, as the Stars would lead by a goal in each period just to have the Legionnaires tie the game minutes later.
In the first, Lacoursiere scored his first goal as a Star from Walchuk and Troy Gerein. That lead lasted nearly eight minutes, as Swift Current scored on a power play.
In the second, Duzan scored from Lacoursiere and that lead lasted less than two minutes, as the Legionnaires tied the game at 2-2.
In the third, it was Frehlick scoring his second goal with the Stars from Bly. Swift Current answered that power play goal five minutes later and forced overtime.
In the extra period, Bly, who leads the Stars in points with 17, scored ending the game with an unassisted goal. He was named the Stars' game star.
Toth earned his second win of the season and the Stars will look for their third win in a row, and fifth in their last six games, as they are at home Thursday. The Stars host the Beardy's Blackhawks at the Civic Centre at 7 p.m., a team the Stars beat 7-2 earlier in the season.
