Spencer Bast was the hero for the Stars in double overtime Thursday night as Battlefords downed the Mintos 3-2 in game two of their SMAAAHL semifinal series at the Art Hauser Centre Arena.
Bast's goal came 6:50 into the second overtime period. The Stars have a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
It was a scoreless first period. Battlefords goaltender Rylan Toth made eight saves in the frame. His counterpart Connor Ingram stopped all 12 of Battlefords' shots.
The Stars got on the board first in the second period. Bast scored his sixth goal of the playoffs from Mason Benning and Alex Pernitsky, beating Ingram on the power play with 8:24 to play in the frame.
Prince Albert tied the game before the end of the period. Near the end of a Keifer Hintz boarding penalty, Wyatt Grant found the back of the net with 3:54 to go. Brody Reimer and Rhys Kipling assisted on Grant's first of the playoffs.
The Mintos took a 2-1 lead with 6:50 to play in the third with another power play goal. Jared Blaquiere beat Toth for his team-leading sixth goal of the post-season with assists from Dakota Boutin and Lance Yaremchuk.
Josh Bly scored his fourth goal of the playoffs with 1:17 left in regulation to send the game in overtime. Brandon Lesko and Josh LaFramboise picked up assists on the tying goal.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Stars took advantage of a two-man advantage in the second extra period. Bast's unassisted goal 6:50 into the overtime period was his second of the game and seventh of the playoffs, giving the Stars a 3-2 win.
Toth made 39 stops to pick up his fifth win of the playoffs. Ingram stopped 40 shots while dropping his second game of the post-season.
The Stars go for the sweep in game three Saturday afternoon at the Civic Centre. Puck drop is 1 p.m.
