Strong showing on weekend for AA Barons

The Battlefords Phoenix Sports Bantam AA Barons were on the road again on the weekend and made it a solid trip, earning three of four points. In Waldheim Saturday, the Barons won 4-2 after taking a 4-0 lead.

In Waldheim Saturday, the Barons won 4-2 after taking a 4-0 lead. Traye Tkatchuk and Colton Iron scored for the Barons in the first period and Brandon Lesko and Layne Young netted goals in the second.

The Sask Valley Diamond Pharmacy Vipers scored twice in the third period on Wyatt Malenfant, but it wasn't enough.

The Barons coaches awarded Malenfant and Matt Vidal with hardhat honours for their efforts in the game.

Sunday, the Barons were up against the West Central Wheat Kings and battled to a 6-6 tie.

Young scored first for the Barons, but the Wheat Kings responded nearly a minute later.

In the second period, Keegan Duret and Iron scored for the Barons, but two minutes later the Wheat Kings scored twice and tied the game again. Keifer Hintz put the Barons up 4-3 late in the third period, but again the Wheat Kings tied the game, this time on a power play with 35 seconds left in the period.

In the third period, West Central took their first lead of the game, but Hintz scored his second of the game to draw the teams even.

Later, Troy Gerein pounced on a rebound with 1:34 left to put the Barons up 6-5. Not so fast. With 55 seconds left, West Central tied the game once more and that was how it ended.

Mathew Flath was in net for the Barons and faced 32 shots.

Along with his two goals, Hintz was presented with the team hardhat after the game.

This weekend will be a busy one for the Barons, as they have three games in three days. Friday they host Humboldt, Saturday, they play in Yorkton and Sunday, they are in Melville.

The Barons are 6-6-2 in the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League standings.
