Although only two games took place on Sunday in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, both contests saw several twists and turns to wrap up the opening weekend of the 2017-18 season in style.
In Yorkton, Matthew Jones completed a two-point night by scoring on Logan Bateman at the 2:42 mark in overtime to give the visiting Weyburn Red Wings a 3-2 win over the Terriers.
Jones’ heroics came nearly two minutes after the Terriers were given a penalty shot in overtime, which saw William Brochu turned aside by Red Wings goaltender Arik Weersink.
Derick Smith and Cole Woodliffe scored for the Red Wings in regulation, while Quinton Hobbs and Kaleb Bell replied for the Terriers.
Sunday’s other matchup went to a shootout in Wilcox as Kaleb Dahlgren scored the lone goal in the skills competition for the Humboldt Broncos in a 4-3 win over the host Notre Dame Hounds.
Dahlgren also helped his team avoid a regulation loss as he scored the game-tying goal with one second left on the clock in the third period.
Tristen Elder led the way on offence for the Broncos with two assists, with the team’s other goals coming from Quinn Schneidmiller and Stephen Wack.
Colby Brandt and Zack Kosteniuk had a goal and an assist each for the Hounds, while Curtis Wiebe also scored in the loss.
