A few more golfers than last year took advantage of sunny skies and balmy conditions to take part in the annual Battlefords United Way golf tournament at Jackfish Lake.
The event, held Monday was the 15th annual event to raise money for the Battlefords United Way and is one of its biggest fundraising events of the year. According to United Way Executive Director Mira Laprell-Elliott, they expected to raise about $15,000 from the charity event.
Battlefords Tribal Council and the Gold Eagle Lodge signed up as major sponsors, and there were several other sponsors on hand as well, with local businesses donating many of the prizes.
Laprell-Elliott reported turnout for the tourney was even better than last year, with 122 players registered for the golf tournament as well as for the dinner that evening at Jackfish Lodge.
Organizers could not have asked for better weather, with temperatures approaching the 30 C mark that afternoon.
"The watering hole is busy out there, so yes, it's a beautiful day," said Laprell-Elliott.
Prizes were awarded in several different categories. One of the major prizes on offer was $10,000 for a hole-in-one, sponsored by RBC.
As of Monday afternoon, Laprell-Elliott reported that while there had been a few close calls, no one had hit the hole-in-one, yet.
The event was less about competitive golf and more about enjoying the day and helping a good cause.
"The whole day is about fun," said Laprell-Elliott.
Proceeds go directly to the United Way and stay in the Battlefords, to be distributed to the United Way's funding partners.
