The Humboldt Hammerheads swim team kicked off the summer competitive season with a very successful 2015 Invitational Spring Meet.
“The Hammerheads swam very well this weekend,” Humboldt head coach Leisl Lefebvre wrote in an email interview. “We had 43 swimmers from our club competing, nine of them for the first time with our club. Our swimmers were posting personal best times all weekend, with significant amounts of time coming off races. It was a great start to our competitive year.”
About 159 swimmers competed at the June 20 event at the Humboldt Aquatic Centre. The Hammerheads more than held their own. Several Humboldt swimmers earned medals in the aggregate point standings in their age group. Brett Lins won gold in the boys under eight group, while Cuyler Brooks was third. Charlize Parish topped the standings in girls 9-10. In the boys 11-12 group, Jay Eichorst won the gold with teammate Darren Romaniuk earning the bronze. In the 13-14 age group, Maya Berscheid won gold for the girls, while Justin Berscheid took home gold for the boys. Michael Carnago finished first in the boys 15-17 group. In the boys 18-99 category, Darwin Lessmeister shared gold with Regina’s Kyle Thompson, while Calum McNally took home silver.
“The dedication shown by all of our swimmers leading up to this weekend was great,” Lefebvre wrote. “Not every swimmer can take home a medal, but the hard work shown in the pool was excellent.”
Some young swimmers impressed their coach by overcoming first meet nerves to perform well.
“The smiles on their faces when they finished and realized they could do it was amazing,” Lefebvre noted.
The Hammerheads have 57 registered swimmers this season. Swimmers over the age of seven can compete in meets and there is no upper limit for age group competitions. The Hammerheads’ meet was the first of a seven-week season that includes meets almost every weekend. It culminates with provincials qualifiers in Watrous on July 19 and the provincial finals in Biggar on July 25-26.

“All the girls are very athletic and are involved in many other sports, which really helps develop all-around good players. These girls have been successful in the past, winning provincial and their willingness to put the time and effort in at practices. The success for this team comes from their work ethic. They come to play and have fun.”
