Humboldt's Brianne Theisen Eaton has had a hell of a summer and she's capped it off with a silver medal in the heptathlon at the world championships in Moscow.
First she married Ashton Eaton, the reigning Olympic champion in the decathlon. Then she and her new husband both came away from the world championships with medals, her that silver in the heptathlon, he a gold in the decathlon.
Theisen Eaton finished with 6,530 points, behind only Ganna Melnichenko of Ukraine, who finished with 6,586 points.
After the first day of the two-day event Theisen Eaton found herself in fourth place. The second day's events were the long jump, javelin and 800m. Theisen Eaton started the day strong, recording a personal best jump of 6.37m in the long jump but was unable to gain any ground, staying in fourth place. After the javelin she had moved up to second place, only 68 points behind Melnichenko with the 800m to come.
In the 800m Theisen Eaton recorded another personal best time of 2:09:03, good for sixth place overall in the event and one spot ahead of Melnichenko. Unfortunately for Theisen Eaton, Melnichenko also recorded a personal best in the event and Theisen Eaton was only able to gain 12 points, leaving her 56 points behind the winner.
Despite the second place finish the total of 6,530 points was a personal best for Theisen Eaton. The silver medal represents her greatest achievement thus far on the international stage, a dramatic improvement over the 15th place finish she recorded in the same event at the 2009 World Championships.
