TISDALE — For the last decade Solestice ran in the community to allow the youth to run. This year that event almost didn’t happen.
This was Scott Brinklow’s first year as an organizer. He said the event was previously Harvey Weber’s baby. Weber retired as a teacher at the end of the last school year.
“He hosted and ran the version of it before, the Hersey Meet. He ran it for years. When he left at the end of last year, they asked, ‘do you still want to host it?’ and I said, ‘yeah, I could.’”
Despite Brinklow agreeing to be the organizer, he’d have his doubts.
“As the date grew closer I thought, ‘I can’t do this’. Too much stress.”
In the end, Brinklow said it came together well and he realized he didn’t actually have anything to stress about.
This includes the weather, which held out as sunny compared to the rain which Solestice faced last year.
“It went well. There were lots of volunteers that made the meet run smoothly and a lot of participants and the weather was nice. There was really no negative things that happened, and everything went as planned.”
This doesn’t mean there wasn’t a challenge with organizing it.
“Because we don’t have a track at the school yet, I had to line the whole field to make a 400 meter track and mark out start lines and finish lines,” Brinklow said. “That was the only challenge, and finding volunteers. We had some students show up at the last minute to volunteer, which really helped.”
He said the original purpose of Solestice was to encourage grassroots participation in track and field.
“With it being grassroots, none of the kids could be wearing spikes, there were no starting blocks. It was just get out there and try each event.”
The top two from each category are eligible to go out to a provincial meet in Saskatoon.
Brinklow’s favorite part of the event was getting to see the youth come and participate.
“There were some really good athletes there. I think to see them come out and continue to do really well was nice.”
He said one of these previous athletes who came back was Levi Graham, an Archerwill resident who won the provincial ball throw last year.”
“[He] came out, and he dominated again. It was good to see that he was still doing really well.”
Brinklow said while he took it on this year for Tisdale, next year it might be hosted in another community for the region.
“It has been tough without a track. Although maybe not having a track is beneficial because we can just line up 40 kids on a start line and just go. If you have a track you’re kind of limited to the track itself.”
