The Melfort Mustangs continued their winning ways on Tuesday at the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Showcase tournament in Saskatoon.
The third ranked team in the country according to the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Top 20 rankings moved to 5-0 for the season with a 5-2 triumph over the Notre Dame Hounds at the Hamm Latrace Arena.
Kalem Zary led the way up front with a goal and an assist, while the rest of the Mustangs’ goals came off the sticks of Kayle Tosh, Carson Albrecht, Justin Ball and Vincent Beaudry.
Alec Zawatsky, who was acquired from the British Columbia Hockey League’s Cowichan Valley Capitals earlier this week, scored twice for the Hounds.
The Mustangs also added another forward to their roster on Tuesday as they picked up Joshua Dobberthien from the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Whitecourt Wolverines.
Dobberthien had no points in three games for the Wolverines this year after putting up 32 points in 34 games last season with the Calgary Buffaloes in the Alberta Midget Hockey League.
The Estevan Bruins turned in another dominating performance on offence as they cruised to an 8-3 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
Michael McChesney had three goals and an assist in the win, while Zach Goberis’ hat-trick performance moved him back ahead of Battlefords North Stars forward Layne Young for first place in the SJHL scoring race.
Defenceman Jake Heerspink had a two-point outing and Hayden Guilderson rounded out the Bruins’ scoring.
Drayton Thunder Chief had two goals in the loss for the Ice Wolves, with Justin Bill also finding the back of the net.
Rounding out Tuesday’s action, Jordan Borgess had a pair of assists for the Humboldt Broncos and goaltender Jacob Wasserman made 22 saves as they edged the Yorkton Terriers by a score of 2-1.
Cole Young and Brayden Camrud scored for the Broncos, while William Brochu ruined Wasserman’s shutout bid with a goal in the final minute of the third period.
