Many of the players on the West Central Wheat Kings female midget roster knew that this season had the potential to be special.
The core group of players won a league title two seasons ago and they were looking to do that and more this season.
The Wheat Kings went 14-2-4 during the regular season in the North Sask Female Hockey League, as they faced the Saskatoon Midget AA and Bantam AA Comets, Delisle, Prince Albert and Melfort.
West Central earned first place and a first round bye in the playoffs. In the semifinal they swept Prince Albert in two games with 6-1 and 1-0 wins. In the league final, the Wheat Kings faced the Saskatoon Bantam AA Comets and played three games in three days. The Comets won game two of the series and forced a third and deciding game. At their home rink in Dodsland, West Central prevailed with a 3-1 win and league championship after trailing 1-0 heading into the final period.
Along with the league championship, the Wheat Kings grabbed the Female Midget AA provincial title. West Central first beat Delisle 3-0 and 2-1 to advance to the northern final. There they beat another familiar team in Prince Albert. Game one ended in a 3-3 tie while Dodsland won game two of the series 2-1.
In the provincial final, West Central beat the Regina Capitals 5-0 and 3-2 to claim the title.
The team was coached by Jason Hennes, Joe Cey and Becky Simpson along with manager Lyle Westman and trainer Ken Besharah.
The roster included girls from Dodsland, Plenty, Eatonia, Kerrobert, Macklin, Wilkie, Unity and Kindersley.
