High school badminton is on its legs for 2018 after the juniors wrapped up their season with the district championships, and the seniors climbed the final step on their way to provincials, with the regional championships.
Junior Districts
The junior district championships were split over the course of two days, with boys and girls singles and mixed doubles heading to Wynyard on May 2, and girls and boys doubles visiting Foam Lake on May 3.
It was a quiet tournament for Humboldt’s three schools, with just Humboldt Collegiate Institute able to reach the top two.
The Mohawks picked up a pair of silver medal finishes as they lost in both the boys singles and mixed doubles finals.
Senior Regionals
The regional championships saw the HCI Mohawks sent a trio of teams to Foam Lake on May 5.
Boys’ Doubles Region C
The Mohawks enjoyed a terrific trip to the regional competition as they nearly completed the perfect tournament, finishing 5-0 and losing just a single set along the way.
The competition got off to a solid start for the Mohawks as they picked up two sets to none wins over both Norquay and Carrot River and a two sets to one win over Debden to finish the round robin as the top seed in their pool with a 3-0 record.
Thanks to the first place finish in their pool, the Mohawks were matched up with Canwood, the second place finisher in the other pool, in the semi-final.
The Mohawks continued their excellent run of play, picking up another two sets to none win, as they moved into the championship final where they took on Debden once again.
After dropping their lone set of the tournament against Debden in the round robin, the Mohawks came out in the final focused, and made sure they would be no third set this time. The pair made quick work of Debden, winning the final two sets to none.
With the tournament win, the Mohawks will move on to the provincial championships in Wilkie on May 12.
The Mohawks will be placed in Pool A at the provincial championships, where they will be matched up with Leader, North Battleford John Paul II, and O’Neill 2.
The top two teams from each of the two pools will make up the four semi-final qualifiers.
Boys’ Singles Region C
The Mohawks also sent a team to compete in the boys single event.
Unfortunately for the Mohawks, it was a much less successful regional competition for their boys single competitor as they failed to reach the playoffs.
The tournament got off to a solid start for the Mohawks, as they picked up a two sets to one win over Sturgis, but back-to-back two sets to one losses to Prince Albert St. Mary and Porcupine Plain, left the Mohawks on the outside looking in at the playoffs.
With the Mohawks unable to move on to the playoffs, they saw their season come to a close.
Girls’ Singles Region C
Rounding out the Mohawks’ contingent was girls’ singles action, where the team enjoyed middling results.
The competition got off to a tough start for the Mohawks as they dropped their opening match two sets to none.
Despite the early loss, the Mohawks were able to shake it off and refocus quickly as they responded with a two sets to one win over Prince Albert Carlton and a two sets to none win over Melfort to earn a spot in the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals the Mohawks were matched up with Debden.
Despite being the lower seed, the Mohawks refused to quit and pushed Debden to the edge but it was not quite enough as they suffered a two sets to one loss and were relegated to the third place final, where they took on Wakaw.
Unfortunately for the Mohawks they were unable to recover from their devastating semi-final loss and were upended two sets to none.
With the fourth place finish the Mohawk saw their season come to a close.
