Two teams slid from Battleford to Northerns

Three teams battled for two spots during the Affinity Credit Union Senior Men's Playdowns on the weekend and one home town team is moving on. The Battleford Curling Club hosted two teams from Unity and a local rink skipped by Rae Morrison.

Three teams battled for two spots during the Affinity Credit Union Senior Men's Playdowns on the weekend and one home town team is moving on.

The Battleford Curling Club hosted two teams from Unity and a local rink skipped by Rae Morrison.

Glen Heitt of Unity skipped his team to wins over Morrison and Al Coutts to advance to the northern playdown, which will take place Feb. 9 to 12 in Kindersley.

Third Daryl Eddingfield, second Garry Maze and lead Bart Brown were members of Heitt's team, who now turn their attention to the action in Kindersley.

Morrison and Coutts, faced off for the second northern playdown berth and it was Morrison's rink that included third Barry Massett, second Lorne Voinorosky and lead Brian Welford advancing to Kindersley.

In master men's curling action, six teams will be in action this weekend in Maidstone competing for two spots at provincials. Jim Johnston and Wally O'Hare of the Battlefords compete against Unity's Jerry Watt, St. Walburg's John Hritzuk, Kindersley's John Feist and Outlook's Jim Carrie.

The provincial men's championship is also underway this weekend in Assiniboia, Scott Manners competed in the regional playoffs in Battlefords and one of the 16 teams competing on the weekend for the chance to play in the Brier in Saskatoon March 3 to 11.

Michelle Englot won the SaskPower Scotties Women's Championship for the seventh time and advanced to the Scotties in Red Deer after beating Stefanie Lawton in the final 9-7 Sunday.

Meadow Lake's Robyn Silvernagle went 3-2 in round robin play at the provincial event. She met Chantelle Eberle in the tie breaker, but lost 8-2 and failed to advance to the playoffs.

Unity's Darlene Gillies was 2-3 in the round robin action and also failed to make the playoff round.
