She is a force to be reckoned with.
Rebecca Unrau, a Humboldt native, is playing hockey at the University of British Columbia (UBC) this season.
So far, Unrau is doing well with her team, placing 10th in the Canada West league, with eight goals and 12 points in 14 games.
Unrau started playing hockey at a young age.
"I've been playing since I was like three years old, so for a long time," said Unrau in an interview with the Journal last week.
She became interested in hockey by watching her brother's hockey games. Since starting, Unrau has not slowed down.
Before headed to the UBC, she played with the Triple A Saskatoon Stars.
"For two years before (I started at UBC), my team went to the Max tournament and the University of British Columbia coach came down and saw me play," said Unrau.
That was her key to earning a scholarship to the UBC.
"He asked me if I would be interested in coming down here and so I had (UBC) and a few other universities in mind to go to," said Unrau. "I knew someone from back home who came here and she loved it."
This is her second year with UBC and Unrau's team is playing well this season.
"It feels overwhelming," said Unrau. "Coming from last year when we won two games and I had two points, it is a lot different."
She credits her teammates with helping her become 10th in the league.
"Obviously I can't take credit for all these points because the team is setting me up," said Unrau. "But it is overwhelming because every time you score a goal, you look up at the clock and see if you are winning. It is just an amazing feeling."
Unrau is also looking forward to the rest of the season and what her team can do.
"My team looks like it is going to make playoffs this year, so I am pretty pumped about that," said Unrau. "Last year, we only won two games, so it is a big jump."
This season, Unrau is trying to recover from a dislocated shoulder she got last season. Over the summer, she had to have surgery to fix her shoulder.
"I'm trying to fight through my surgery but it isn't doing so well," said Unrau. "I don't really think about it on the ice, but when I come off, I feel it."
Unrau is hoping it will heal so she can continue to play hockey.
She doesn't know what she wants to take yet and is just taking Arts, but wants to transfer to Kinesiology or Nursing next year.
"I don't know what I want to be yet, so we'll see how long I'm in school," said Unrau. "You can only play hockey for five years so I hope I can be injury free for that long. "
