North Battleford Comprehensive High School hosted teams from inside and outside the province at the Vikings Senior Boys' Volleyball Tournament this past weekend.
Teams that took part included NBCHS, John Paul II, Waldheim, Bishop James Mahoney, Nipawin, Bellevue, Wetaskiwin and Meadow Lake. Each team ended up playing seven opponents in the round robin with the top four moving on to the playoffs.
It was the Meadow Lake Spartans that ended up dominating, winning all seven of their round-robin matchups. In the playoff round, they went on to knock off NBCHS in the semifinal after the Vikings had gone 4-3 during the round robin.
The Spartans then took down the BJM Saints in the final, winning by 25-20 and 25-14 scores to claim the title.
NBCHS ended up taking on Wetaskiwin for the bronze, with the Vikings winning the first game 25-20 before Wetaskiwin came back to win the next two 25-14 and 25-23 to take the matchup and claim the bronze.
Overall, Vikings' volleyball coach Bruce Friesen was happy with the turnout of teams for the tournament.
"It went fairly smooth," said Friesen. "We had a pretty good smattering of teams there from different classifications in terms of size as well as different regions represented, so it was pretty good that way."
Next up for the Vikings is a trip across the city to John Paul II this weekend for their volleyball tournament. That will be followed by regionals in Prince Albert Nov. 9 and 10, and then a week later NBCHS will host 5A Provincials.
