Vikings find gold twice

The search for volleyball gold led the two North Battleford Comprehensive High School senior teams in different directions, but both prevailed with gold medals from their tournament play on the weekend.

The NBCHS girls basketball team are getting used to posing with their gold medals. They did it again last weekend at their home tournament. Team members include: assistant coach Derek Wilkinson, Shallen McNabb, Quinn Eberle, Shania Magnusson, Avery Saunders, coach Bryan Cottini, Mikaela York, Amy Russell, Jessica Landrie, Zena Johnson, Cree Frank, Halley Zehner, Jordin Wilkinson, Kendra Humenny, Tori Heinemann and Leah Campbell.

The search for volleyball gold led the two North Battleford Comprehensive High School senior teams in different directions, but both prevailed with gold medals from their tournament play on the weekend.

The girls team hosted their annual tournament and went undefeated earning three wins. The first victory came against Carpenter High School of Meadow Lake. The Vikings won 69-27.

Next, the Vikings beat St. Mary's High School from Prince Albert 49-19.

In the final, the Vikings faced Humboldt Collegiate, a rematch from the Prince Albert tournament a weekend earlier. In the previous meeting between NBCHS and Humboldt., Humboldt won by 13 points and handed the Vikings their first and only loss on the season.

Not this time, the Vikings won 72-49 on their home court and bumped their record up to 19-1 on the season.

The girls' team has the weekend off, but are scheduled to take in the LCBI tournament in Outlook next weekend. So far the Vikings have played in tournaments in Prince Albert twice, Saskatoon, Melfort and their home tournament.

The NBCHS boys were in Meadow Lake for the Carpenter High School Invitational. In their first game, NBCHS beat the host team 71-45.

The Vikings went on to beat Prince Albert Carlton 73-55 to earn a spot in the championship game.

In the final, the rivalry between NBCHS and Prince Albert St. Mary's was renewed. The Vikings prevailed with an 84-79 win.

The Viking boys are also taking a weekend off after five previous tournaments including Prince Albert St. Mary's, BOWLT Classic in Saskatoon, Lethbridge, Alta. Moose Jaw and Meadow Lake. The boys will host their annual tournament March 2 and 3.
