The season is still months away, but North Battleford Comprehensive High School football coach Jamie Sommerfeld is already getting his team prepared for the 2013-14 campaign.

As soon as school ended, the Rueben Mayes field flooded with football hopefuls.

Between 35 and 40 students Grades 9-11 showed up Monday afternoon for the first of the three-day NBCHS spring football camp. The highly competitive Vikings finished second place in the Saskatoon Secondary Schools Athletic Directorate 3A football last season.

The upcoming year might not bring the same success, with most of the players being new to the team. Sommerfeld said he never knows what he's going to get with new players, and most of the focus this week will be on skill development and getting the guys familiar with what to expect next season.

The positions were split up into groups where they worked on individual skills. Sommerfeld had help from some graduating players in running the camp, which ran them through some basic drills to get the feel for things.

High school football season kicks off at the beginning of September, so the lack of practice time before the year gets underway makes this week's camp that much more important.
