Wilkie duo wins badminton provincial championship

A Wilkie team won the Provincial High School Badminton Championship for girls' doubles Saturday afternoon in Warman. Allison Cey and Chelsea Gruber defeated Kylie McDaid and Santanna Bill from Leoville 2-0 (21-16, 21-9) to win the provincial title.

A Wilkie team won the Provincial High School Badminton Championship for girls' doubles Saturday afternoon in Warman.

Allison Cey and Chelsea Gruber defeated Kylie McDaid and Santanna Bill from Leoville 2-0 (21-16, 21-9) to win the provincial title. It was a rematch of the regional final that saw McDaid and Bill beat Cey and Gruber.

Cey and Gruber lost only one set at the tournament in their opening match against Megan Farrell and Brooke Tkachyk from Foam Lake. The Wilkie team beat Oxbow's Breanne Wolkowski and Alaina McKinnon 2-0 (21-4, 21-12) in the semifinal.

McDaid and Santana went through the round robin without dropping a set. They downed Farrel and Tkachyk 2-1 (17-21, 21-10, 21-16) to reach the final.

In the boys' doubles competition, Unity's Trace Sperle and Mark Ganter did not win a match in the round robin and failed to advance to the playoff round.
