Winter Games reps decided in NB

North Battleford was the venue on the weekend for some of the top young curlers in the province to play for the right to represent Saskatchewan at next year’s Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

This was some of the action Thursday at Northland Power Curling Centre from the first round of the Canada Winter Games trials running from Thursday to Sunday. In the end the teams of Brecklin Gervais and Skylar Ackerman won themselves spots in the Canada Games in Red Deer.

North Battleford was the venue on the weekend for some of the top young curlers in the province to play for the right to represent Saskatchewan at next year’s Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

Six teams each on both the men’s and women’s side were in competition at the Northland Power Curling Centre from Thursday to Sunday, playing down to determine which rinks would have the right to represent Saskatchewan in the national competition.

On the men’s side it was the team of Brecklin Gervais out of Kronau defeating the team of Daymond Bernath by a 6-3 score. Gervais scored one in the second, two in the third, two in the sixth and one more in the eighth to earn the victory.

Team Gervais won six out of seven games at the playdowns including a semifinal over the Cody Sutherland rink by an 8-4 score. The winning team includes third James Hom, second Andrew Myers and lead Josh Donais.

On the women’s side it was Skylar Ackerman’s team of Moose Jaw defeating the rink of Madison Kleiter by an 11-8 score in the finals. After dropping their first game to Kleiter, the Ackerman team won their next six in a row to punch their ticket to the Canada Games. The team includes third Madison Johnson, second Chantel Hoag and lead Samantha McLaren.

The Canada Winter Games run from Feb. 16 to March 2, 2019.
