Two champions of the 2016 provincials are back with a new team to compete for the title here in Humboldt.

“We are aiming to make the playoffs and hope for the best, one game at a time,” said Ashley Howard, the skip.

Three-quarters of this year’s Team Howard is the same as last year. Ashley Howard and Ashley Williamson, lead, were both part of the Jolene Campbell rink that represented Saskatchewan at the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Grande Prairie, Alta.

Last year, the team picked up Carly Howard, Ashley Howard’s cousin, from Toronto to serve as the third. The newest member of the team is Kaitlin Corbin, who’s the second.

“Carly has won Ontario at the university level and Kaitlin has won a club championship provincial title,” said Ashley Howard. “This is Kaitlin’s first women’s provincial.”

The team, which is based out of Regina’s Highland Curling Club, is coached by Russ Howard, Ashley Howard’s father and an Olympic gold medalist. They are ranked eighth among women’s teams in Saskatchewan on the Canadian Team Ranking System. Nationally, they are ranked 43rd.

“The provincials are our favourite event each season. We work all year to take part in this event,” said Ashley Howard, who’s also the executive director of CurlSask. “Working with CurlSask I know how much work it takes to put on such an awesome event – so we appreciate everyone’s efforts and look forward to being part of the event.”

The team also made a point of thanking the Humboldt Curling Club for hosting the event.
