The top scorer in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League will be staying in the province for his post-secondary hockey career.

The Battlefords North Stars announced Thursday morning that captain Layne Young has committed to play for the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon for the 2018-19 season.

Young, a 20 year old from Frenchman Butte, is in his third campaign with the North Stars and has 64 points in 32 games this year for the defending Canalta Cup champions.

He had 71 points in 53 games last season to finish one point back of teammate Coby Downs in team scoring and was fifth among all players in the SJHL.

Young was also named SJHL rookie of the year in the 2015-16 campaign after leading all first year players with 75 points in 57 games.

The Huskies, who are currently second in Canada West with a 13-2-1 record, are a perennial threat nationally but are still in search of the first University Cup title since 1983.

North Battleford’s Jordan Fransoo is currently a member of the Huskies blueline, while former Humboldt Broncos and Flin Flon Bombers defenceman Josh Roach and former Humboldt Broncos forward John Lawrence are the two SJHL graduates on the roster.

Young is the third player from this year's North Stars squad to commit to a post-secondary program, as forward MacGregor Sinclair and defenceman Levi Klieboer have announced their intentions to play for the Canisius Golden Griffins and the Maine Black Bears.
