What is the best way to level out the playing field in high school football?

Both the North Battleford Comprehensive High School and John Paul II Collegiate will be looking for the answer to that question in the next few seasons, but with the Battlefords Minor Football program they are step closer to competing with the top teams in their leagues.

Exposing students to football at a younger age should make it easier for them to understand the fundamentals once they play for high school teams and from their they should have an interest and desire for the sport.

Battlefords Minor Football is in its inaugural season and with a handful of coaches with football experience the BMF programs has been practicing since the beginning of the month and Wednesday they played their first scrimmage action against Prince Albert.

The program is designed for the Grade 7 and 8 students and gives all players a basic skill and knowledge foundation and an opportunity to try a number of positions. BMF operates a six-man football programs as opposed to the nine-man that John Paul II will play and 12-man that NBCHS plays.

BMF practices twice a week and will be in Rosetown May 30 for their second head-to-head scrimmage option. The next home game for BMF is scheduled for June 22 against Meadow Lake.
