The Zone 7 midget team reached the A final of the annual Sask First Tournament last weekend in Saskatoon.

The tournament is held by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association.

Zone 7 is made up of players from Meadow Lake to Kindersley, including the Battlefords.

Their first game was Friday against Zone 4, consisting of players from the Yorkton and Melville area. Zone 7 won 7-2 after one practice as a team Thursday afternoon.

It was a full arena Saturday morning when Zone 7 took on Saskatoon's Zone 6. They beat Saskatoon 3-2 to stay undefeated.

In the afternoon, Zone 7 won 5-4 over Zone 5, which was made up of players from Humboldt, Warman, Martensville, Fort Qu'Appelle and surrounding area.

Zone 7's undefeated pool play sent them to the A final against the Estevan and Weyburn area's Zone 1. However, it was Zone 1 that downed Zone 7 6-2 to claim the A championship.

"I believe that [the players] represented themselves, their families, their communities and their entire zone very well throughout the entire weekend," said head coach Nathan Loomes after the tournament final.

The team was made up of midget aged players from across Zone 7. They were selected following a tryout camp in Kyle in February.
