MUSHTALER ; Sam Mushtaler passed away in the University Hospital in Edmonton April 26, 2011. Sam was born September 30, 1926 in Arlee, Saskatchewan to parents, Anastasia and George Mushtaler. He married Eleanor Lucille Boulton June 4, 1955 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan and had three children. Sam is survived by his children: Cindy Walter of South Surrey, B.C. Dwight Mushtaler & wife Maureen, of Lloydminster, Alberta, Shelley Mushtaler of Sherbrooke, Quebec. Grandchildren: Kara Sanford & husband Stacy of Vancouver, B.C. Christy Mushtaler of Lloydminster, Alberta, Melanie Mushtaler of Lloydminster, Alberta, Samantha Walter of Penticton, B.C; Great Granddaughter Ashley Sanford * and in 1 month time, Great Grandson Zachary Sanford; siblings: Lydia Waytook of Kelowna, B.C. Walter Mushtaler of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Sam was predeceased by his wife Lucille, sisters Eva Dibblee, Emma Rowney and brother George. Sam ran the Mushtaler General Store and Post Office in Prongua, Saskatchewan until the store closed in 1969 and the Post Office in 1970. He worked for Canada Post in North Battleford for 28 years until his retirement in 1988. Sam and Lucille moved from Prongua into Battleford, then to their final home in Lloydminster. In March 2010 Sam moved into the Pioneer Lodge in Lloydminster. Sam was often found winning the "big pot" at the lodge's cribbage tournaments. He enjoyed cards, puzzles, and every sport that was televised. He had to cut his telephone conversations short if you just happened to call during a hockey game or curling bonspiel. He was still holding out for the Toronto Maple Leafs "big come back"! Sam loved to spend his summers at the family cottage at Murray Lake, always ready for a game of bocce ball or that first beer of the day. It is definitely five o'clock somewhere. He enjoyed golfing with family and friends and loved the camaraderie of the 19th hole. Sam was always known as the "gentle quiet man" however he would catch you off guard with one of his large repertoire of jokes and then his hardy laugh after he delivered the punch line. Sam was a "gardener extraordinaire", keeping yearly journals of his plantings and what worked and what didn't, dating back to the 1950s. Anyone that knew Sam knew his love for his music. He played the banjo, guitar and violin. We are sure heaven is now filled with the sound of Sam's violin playing a tune from his favourite, Don Messer....you go Dad!! The Funeral Service was held Monday, May 2, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from Battleford United Church, Battleford, SK with Rev. Nora Borgeson officiating. Shared Memories were given by Shelley Mushtaler and Nick Nykiforuk. Gifts of Music were shared by Organist, Mrs, M. Junice Headley; Battleford United Church Choir; Shelley Mushtaler: "Pour Out My Heart"; Shane Borgeson: "How Great Thou Art"; Hymn: "Amazing Grace" and Special Music by Don Mitchell and Neil Smith. Pallbearers were Brian Rowney, Ben Boulton, Dwayne Rowney, Randy Graham, Daryl Nelson and Clark Drury. The family requests any donations to the Parkinson Society Canada, 4211 Younge St. Suite 316, Toronto, ON M2P 2A9. Interment took place at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, North Battleford, SK. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Battlefords Funeral Service 446-4200. Light a candle for those we mourn. Into a new life they will be born. Do not look for them at the gravesite. They are somewhere radiating their beautiful light. They have gone to a new world where there is no darkness, no pain. Their light and essence will always remain. Light a candle for they have not really gone. With each flickering flame, in your hearts they will always belong. _____________________________________________________
