Dear Editor
I have recently learned that city council has just recently tabled a motion related to a request by Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 70 to waive the fees levied to place and remove barricades that were used during the provincial legion convention.
All members of council have, on various occasions, shown us they understand the fact there are many services provided in the city, for which the City does not earn a full financial recovery. Just being a city requires us to provide many, many services where in point of fact specific recovery is not at all possible. The taxpayers, as residents of the city understand our taxes are used to cover the broad scope of these services, and they expect council to act diligently at all times, regarding the management of the costs related to these same services.
The taxpayers expect and are entitled to vigilant stewardship on the part of the individuals they have duly elected to represent the community. We commend council for the efforts they continue to make in order to recover, where possible, a good portion of the costs that are assessed to the group or groups that are using the services. We know how hard it is to manage our own finances. We all appreciate council's determination to offer appropriate financial direction to our City administrators regarding services provided within our community.
The issue with the legion request needs to be addressed with honest compassion and heartfelt gratitude towards those great souls who represent heroic service to our country and our own community.
I have great faith council will show the wisdom of our elders when they vote in favour of the legion's request.
Lest we forget!
