I am tired of reading the News-Optimist about downtown North Battleford and how Carousel Bingo is a detriment to the situation. I would like to point out that Carousel Bingo is a very important part of the community, generating revenue for many charities in and around North Battleford, including Kiwanis, Associated Canadian Travelers (who donate to the CUPlex), Rotary, Boys and Girls Club, and the Elks, to mention a few.
In the 19 years this hall has operated, $9.4 million has been distributed to charities. Since the no smoking law came in, revenue has declined, but many charities still depend on that income, which was $266,027 in 2011. We do not have figures for 2012 yet.
The bingo also provides employment to 15 people, being open 12 hours per day, six days per week. Wages for 2011 amounted to $266,000. It is a welcoming place for many seniors who live within a few blocks and are able to walk over, spend some time, maybe win some money and have lunch. Many times the bingo is the only place within a block where you can get a lunch to eat in or take out.
The building in which the hall is located is maintained in a clean and neat condition. There are ashtrays hung outside so that cigarette butts are not thrown on the sidewalk.
The board of the NB Northwest Bingo Association try very hard to provide a positive place for people to gather downtown.
