Dear Editor
The North Battleford Good Neighbour Network is hosting the fifth annual Neighbourhood Wellness Block Party from noon to 6 p.m. on the 1200 block of 107th Street in North Battleford Sept. 7.
Many neighbourhoods or city blocks have connections amongst themselves and watch out for each other. But there is a larger picture and this is about a community of people watching out for each other. This is so more important with the growth we are going through and the negative effects of progress that comes in the form of crime, general safety concerns on our streets and issues around our homes and businesses. The idea of this event is to connect people and let each other know we are watching out for others and hopefully send a message to those who are causing the problems. This will be a good opportunity for community organizations that have a stake in safe and comfortable neighbourhoods to showcase their agenda and network with the citizens.
Each year with a number of volunteers and the support of donations from businesses we have had free hot dogs, popcorn drinks and live music. We usually gave away between 300 and 500 hot dogs each year and up to 500 bags of popcorn. We have had face painting, the Balloon Guy, a petting zoo and each child left with a prize in previous years. We even had a few door prizes for adults.
Again, this year we are asking for donations and help for the day. In kind donations or gift certificates work best because we prefer not to get cash donations if possible. Below is a list of items we will need for the day's event. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.
Food items: Hot dogs, buns or bread, mustard, relish, Ketchup, coffee, juice, sugar, whitener, drinking water or juices, ice and popcorn.
Other items: napkins, paper cups, paper bags for popcorn, coffee makers.
Equipment: portable toilets, garbage barrels, tables, chairs, propane, a large tent.
Services: photocopying, advertising, city permit payment.
We also need face paint and we would like to have school supplies for kids' prizes/give-away this year.
Anyone interested in entertaining, having a display booth, helping out with the day or donating food, drinks or other incidentals please contact Steven Cormons at 306-446-0415, 1221 - 107th St. or [email protected].
