Dignity for the weakest among us

Dear Editor

Right-of-center governments are often stereotyped as focusing too much on business and the bottom line. A case in point is recent criticism of the Sask. Party for not being more proactive on the issue of gay-straight alliances in high schools. That is why it's important to look beyond the rhetoric.

For years now, the Brad Wall government has quietly been directing millions of dollars into areas that shatter that right-wing stereotype. You only have to look as far as a couple of recent announcements to see proof of that - the elimination of the 440-person wait list for programs for people with intellectual disabilities and the 10,000 people now living with a greater degree of dignity and quiet pride because of the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability Program.

Mahatma Gandhi once said "A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats it's weakest members."

We hear much these days about how great Saskatchewan's economy is doing and how many people are moving here. While that is welcome news, it is only when you look at our province in the context of Mr. Gandhi's words that you get a true sense of Saskatchewan's "greatness."
