Get back at it

Many people take the summer off from their exercise routines. Schedules, holidays and the rush, rush of summer often make us feel OK about taking the time off. But now it's time to get back at it.

Many people take the summer off from their exercise routines. Schedules, holidays and the rush, rush of summer often make us feel OK about taking the time off. But now it's time to get back at it. Holidays are over, the kids are heading back to school and, let's face it, your waistline tells a tale of late night wiener roasts and boat parties.

Getting back into your workout routine can be challenging. Here are some tips to help you get back on track today.

Ease in. If you've taken a break from exercise, especially an extended one, don't expect to get right back on the bench and press the same weight you were doing before. You should ease back into it. Lower the weight to avoid injuring yourself. Easing back into your routine will also help you avoid those horribly sore muscles post-workout.

Stop delaying. Let's be honest, Saskatchewan weather has not been that great this year! Those hopes of being active outside this summer are long gone. Stop saying "I'll get back at it once summer is over". Summer never really began. No more delaying. Don't plan to start "next Monday". Start today.

Get extra motivation. Join a fitness class, find a workout buddy or hire a trainer to get you back into routine. Once you're back in the habit, you'll be good to go. Maybe it will just take one session booked with a trainer to get you to force yourself to walk through those gym doors again.

As Nike says "Just Do It." Remember how great you felt and looked in June and how excited you were to put on that new bikini or trunks for the first time this year? Let's get back to that feeling.

So, hit the gym, hit the trail, hit the track. Whatever your passion is, just get at it today. Not tomorrow, not Monday TODAY!

Say It! Mean It! Do It!
