Inspired to move

Life As I Know It
Colleen Crawford

It pays to talk with new people about new things and a fresh, new look at life. Last night I talked with a friend who is bright and shiny and new to me. We have several things in common. I look at her and see a vision of where I would like to direct my own life. In three words, she inspires me.

This particular friend is someone I met when I worked for the school. She was my port in the storm and taught me everything I needed to know, and more, to do my job. She was kind, helpful and encouraging. We had many short, interrupted conversations throughout the months we worked together and found we had enough in common to pursue "the rest of the story" someday over coffee.

Someday often does not happen unless you specifically set a date, a place and a time. Once that original date has been set, one can easily wander off and live your own life unless someone makes the next move. Lately, "I" have not been that person but thankfully she was.

We have had that next cup of coffee and last night was my turn to play host and I invited her into my world. As I hastily tidied up the house before her arrival, I realized if I invited more people over our house would be cleaner. But I digress. My hostessing skills are rather rusty and the state of disrepair within our home embarrasses me a little. But there was no time to paint the kitchen cupboards, repair the damaged corners and chipped paint down the hallway, nor clean and/or replace the carpet and couches. So I tidied a path to where we would visit and thought I would just have to work with what I had.

We sat down, conversation came easy, we talked of that which we had in common, a little bit of life in general and then it happened. She started telling me the story of the Christmas gift her and her husband had bought each other. They have invested in their health and bought each other a Fitbit. I had never heard of such a thing. She was happy to show and explain it to me.

It is a simple little piece of technology you wear on your wrist and it measures your steps, distance, heartbeat, calories burned, active moments and even tracks your sleep patterns. You sync this with your phone or iPad and you get a detailed look at the information it tracks. It sets goals, reminders and kind of makes a game of trying to trick you into moving more.

I Googled this product the minute she walked out the door so I wouldn't forget to investigate this little device the next morning.

I woke up with Fitbit on my mind. How could I justify this purchase and perhaps supplement it with a treadmill or something to encourage moving while watching TV? My reward points on my credit cards, that's how! I can make this little investment and it won't cost me a penny. But will I actually move more?

I was seriously questioning my ability to commit to such an idea. Then I found this as I meandered Facebook this morning: "Saw some idiot at the gym put a water bottle where the Pringles go on the treadmill" (original author unknown) and I immediately decided if I can find a treadmill with a Pringle's holder, I am all in! Does anyone have a spare treadmill with a Pringles holder they are willing to deliver?
