Dear Editor

The vote on motion 312, which was a motion to study the scientific evidence available to substantiate whether an unborn baby is in fact a human being, occurred Sept. 26 in Parliament. Sadly, the majority of MPs did not support the motion. The entire NDP and the Quebec caucuses voted against it, as did all but two Liberal members. In total just over 90 members supported the motion.

Motion 312 is actually asking an important question: Are we killing unborn children in this country or not? The scientific information is overwhelmingly supportive and emphatic in stating that an unborn baby is in fact a human being. However, in spite of all evidence, we still have a law that does not recognize the dignity of the unborn child in our country. If one looks to science for answers, this is almost inconceivable. However, there are many who will pick and choose whether they will use the science to discover the truth.

The recent proclamation by the Canadian Medical Association stating that human life begins at birth is utter nonsense. The few hundred doctors who made this proclamation at their recent convention have brought shame to a noble profession.

Here we have some of the brightest and well educated people in the country acting like fools by totally ignoring all the scientific evidence that dispels their proclamation. This is the folly of political correctness, for these doctors know the scientific facts about prenatal life. The fact that the majority of MPs, including the PM, failed to support a motion that would enlighten all Canadians on the truth about fetal life, is a very troubling sign in our democracy.

We would do well to heed the words of one of the greatest humanitarians this century has seen: The late John Paul II: "I do not hesitate to proclaim before you and all the world, that all human life from conception and through all subsequent states is sacred."
