Nadal is clay court royalty

Stand witness tennis fans, you are seeing the greatest single surface player ever.

After Rafael Nadal captured his tenth French Open singles title he can now lay claim, if he could not already, to being the best single surface player of all time.

Nadal burst onto the scene as a 19 year old phenom when he won his first French Open Title in 2005.

Just prior to winning the French in 2005 Nadal began a streak of 81 consecutive clay court match victories, a span of more than two years.

Since then he has amassed a career clay court record of 389-35, a winning percentage of more than 90 per cent.

His French Open Record is nearly perfect as he sports a 79-3 record, with one of those losses coming thanks to a wrist injury forcing him to withdrawn from his third round match last year.

In addition to ten major championships at the French Open Nadal also has won 22 clay court Maters Series 1000 tournaments, which are the largest tournaments outside of the majors.

After failing to capture the French Open for two years in a row, thanks to a number of injuries including knee and wrist problems Nadal returned to Roland Garros and left no doubt.

He rolled through the tournament not dropping a set along the way and dominated losing just 35 total games, the second fewest all time.

In his final two matches Nadal beat Dominic Thiem, won knocked off Nadal earlier in the year 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 and romped over Stan Wawrinka in the final winning, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in a match that was not close right from the start.

In an era where we have seen the likes of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, as well as arguably the greatest all around player of all time in Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, tennis fans have been very spoiled.

To me though while the accomplishments of Federer are impressive having accumulated seven Wimbledon championships, five US Open and Australian Open titles and a record 18 major championships it is Nadal who stands tall.

Ten major championships is an impressive feat and is something we need to enjoy.

It will almost assuredly not happen again.
