It was a long haul, but we’ve finally made it to 2017 after the struggles of 2016.
For Tisdale, it could be a good year, depending on how all of these rumours of new development shake out. We know for sure there’s going to be a Sobeys liquor store. We’ve been told for years that a new Beeland Co-op Food Store will begin construction in the spring, barring the unexpected. As for other developments – I’ll tell you when I get any confirmation.
There are also some threats to our town we should prepare for. The provincial government is reviewing health regions. My suspicion is they’ll become much larger. We’ll be affected because the headquarters of the Kelsey Trail Health Region are right here – so if the health regions become larger, the headquarters could be moved to a larger centre like Prince Albert, Saskatoon or even Regina.
School divisions are also being reviewed, with the options being one large province-wide school divisions, four larger school divisions or adjusting the boundaries of the current school divisions. Right now, the Town of Tisdale is represented by a trustee. If school division become larger, the town could lose its exclusive representation by being sucked up into a larger area – unless the province decides that school division trustees should be appointed.
On the provincial and federal levels, the opposition parties will be electing their new leaders. The New Democrats will be doing so on both levels, while the Conservatives are doing so federally. Focusing on Saskatchewan, it’s rather disappointing that there’s not a peep to be heard so far from the New Democrat Official Opposition. It’s not good for the province when there’s no alternative threatening to take government if the governing party messes up.
2017 should be an interesting and exciting year. Keep reading us to find out what happens.
