The Town of Battleford is urging us to take a look at what we toss into the trash by declaring a designated Waste Reduction Week in October.
Waste reduction is a noble cause, and we all have a duty to do what we can to reduce the amount and toxicity of the things we throw in the trash.
The reduce and reuse aspects of the three Rs are relatively easy to accomplish as individuals, but the recycle aspect takes more of a teamwork approach.
The Battlefords have an extensive recycling system in place, but I think it's time to review just how well that system works. Extensive misuse of the designated recycling bins continues, in spite of efforts to educate the public and to monitor their use.
Communities with blue box programs have it right. If items are placed in the boxes are not recyclable the box will not be emptied. In that program, those lacking in basic common sense can't mess up the system for all those who want to follow the rules.
