Several weeks ago my article was inspired by picking raspberries. Today, my thoughts took root while I was weeding. First of all and as strange as it sounds, I thoroughly enjoy the process of digging down and tearing out unwelcome plants from our vegetable plot. There’s nothing more satisfying than to dig deep and to yank hard.

One of the things I had to get used to after moving here from the prairies was the presence of foreign things in the ground. I found odd and sundry items such pieces of glass, rusty nails and old door hinges. The number of conspiracy theories I created was as plentiful as the merchandise I collected: Who put them there? Why? What was the reason? Those were just some of the questions I posed to myself and to the unknown donors.

As I learned more about the history of our city, I discovered this community was once a major producer of food. Back then it was even more geographically isolated than it is now because those were the days before there was even basic ferry service. It was grow it, raise it and preserve it or go without it.

Returning to the subject of discarded glass and metal, I also learned by experience that slugs love our damp, sometimes wet, weather. They also like my veggies. It’s my understanding gardeners would deposit these items into the soil to build up iron content and to deter these slimy gastropod molluscs.

That’s when my thoughts turned to the importance of guarding our hearts and of learning to apply God’s principles in everyday situations.

“My son, give attention to my words … keep them in the midst of your heart for they are life … and health … keep your heart with all diligence for out of it spring the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:20-23)
