Recently we observed International Women’s Day.
But my questions is why?
Not why do we show appreciation for women.
But why do we need a special day for it?
Should we not appreciate people of all sexes, races, and religions everyday?
And it is not just women’s day.
Look around, there is a day for basically everything now.
There is not a week that goes by that we are not having a day for something.
Just to name a few, we have a day for lover’s called Valentine’s Day, we have a day for moms called Mother’s Day, and we have a day for dads called Father’s Day.
Why have we gotten to the point in society where we need to have all these days to recognize all these different people?
To me it feels like we are saying you are more important or more special on this day than you are on any other day of the year.
And that is simply not true.
In mentioning this before I have received feedback stating that we celebrate International Women’s Day as a way to bring awareness to the idea that women are not being treated as an equal.
Fair enough.
But here is my issue with that.
I cannot speak for everyone but in my experiences all International Women’s Day did was cause people to post all over their social media talking about the women who are important to them.
So what did this accomplish?
If everyone is talking about it but nobody is doing anything are we really accomplishing anything?
An example of this is the ice bucket challenge for Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
I participated in the ice bucket challenge and I was criticized by people because they said well what good is dumping a bucket of ice cold water over your head?
And they were right.
The difference was I also took that opportunity to donate to the ALS Society of Canada.
So I was bringing awareness to the cause and doing a small part to make a difference.
International Women’s Day should be the same.
If you are celebrating International Women’s Day because you feel women are being unjustly discriminated against and are not being treated as an equal to a male that is fair.
But instead of just standing idly by talking about it and posting about it on social media, you should do something to help create change.
Like I said I cannot say that everyone was all talk and no action but I know their were some and this is aimed at them.
And if you are just posting about it on social media, does that not just say you think those people are more special on this day more so than any other?
It is time we stop making days for the sake of having days.
If there is something to fight for we should fight for it, not just talk about it.
Otherwise all we are doing is making people more special on one specific day, when all of the decent people in civilization deserve to be special everyday.
If we would all treat each other with honesty and respect everyday the world would be a much better place.
