When is enough, enough?

Dear Editor When is enough, enough? Taking our planet for granted is reflected in our children's attitudes or behaviours when it comes to Halloween.

Dear Editor

When is enough, enough? Taking our planet for granted is reflected in our children's attitudes or behaviours when it comes to Halloween.

When I was a child, and when my children celebrated Halloween, we visited the neighbouring farms, which amounted to six to ten stopes. We had fun and it was enough.

Today we are consuming like there is no tomorrow. It is not enough to collect one pillowcase full, but to empty it at home and return for a second bag. It is as though there is a competition out there to see who can get the most candy. When is enough, enough?

Thank goodness, a few children are refusing chocolate that is produced by child labour in favour of fair trade chocolate.

And then there is the health issue. Is there any wonder why we have epidemic diabetes and obesity?

Teachers and parents should teach the children to respect the earth, other people and themselves. Teach them to live simply, so that others (in the Third World) can simply live.
