Prince Albert Police Service see busy weekend of calls

A man is facing drug trafficking charges following a traffic stop resulting in the seizure of cocaine and a machete.

PRINCE ALBERT - Over the weekend, the Prince Albert Police Service received more than 300 calls for service.

Here is an overview of some of the incidents during that time period.

A man is facing drug trafficking charges following a traffic stop resulting in the seizure of cocaine and a machete.

On May 23 at approximately 3:30 p.m. while doing a routine patrol travelling south on 6th Avenue East, a member of Prince Albert Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan observed a vehicle driving erratically. The vehicle continued to 5th Avenue where it attempted a U-turn and at that time, the officer activated their emergency equipment and initiated a traffic stop. The officer then observed alcohol in the vehicle and detained the male driver for an impaired driving investigation. Through further investigation, the male was found to have a large amount of Canadian currency in his pocket. A further search resulted in locating a machete, and more than 150 grams of cocaine.

As a result, the 43-year-old man was arrested and has now been charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of the proceeds of crime over $5,000, and possession of a weapon.

The Prince Albert Police Service is investigating an incident where a firearm was discharged Friday night.

On May 23 at approximately 7 p.m., police were called to the 400 block of 12th Street East for a report of a gunshot. Upon arrival, officers located a suspect vehicle and followed it until it came to a stop at the intersection of 6th Avenue East and 15th Street East. Officers activated their vehicle’s emergency lights and attempted to box in the vehicle; however, the vehicle began to drive and collided with a patrol car before fleeing the scene. Officers did not pursue the vehicle to ensure public safety as traffic was heavy.

Later that night, officers located a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description parked outside a business in the 2700 block of 15th Avenue East. The officer activated their vehicle’s emergency lights and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle fled westbound on 28th Street East at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was not pursued to ensure public safety.

The suspect vehicle is described as a black Audi with Saskatchewan Licence Plate number 344 NUP. Police are continuing to investigate and anyone with information in relation to this incident or regarding the suspect vehicle is asked to contact police at 306-953-4222. On May 23 at approximately 9:05 p.m., police were called to the 800 block of 15th Street East for a report of a robbery. Initial information stated a male had robbed another man and threatened him with a wrench. Responding officers located a male matching the suspect description on 6th Avenue East accompanied by a female. Officers approached the male and he was arrested without further incident.

Shortly after the suspect was placed into the back of a patrol car, officers learned the female had opened the door of the patrol car in an attempt to help the male escape. Officers were able to stop the male before he fled and the female was also arrested after a short foot pursuit.

As a result, a 22-year-old man has been charged with escaping lawful custody and breaching a conditional sentence order.

The 16-year-old female has been charged with obstructing police and rescuing or permitting escape.

The robbery remains under investigation.

One man was arrested and another was sent to hospital with serious injuries following a stabbing early Saturday morning.

At approximately 1 a.m. on May 24, police were called to the 1100 block of 18th Street West for a weapons complaint. Initial information stated a male had been stabbed and the suspect remained at the scene.

Upon arrival, officers located two males in a physical altercation.

Officers quickly seized a knife from the scene and arrested the male suspect while other officers attended to the other male who was observed to have serious injuries consistent with a stab wound.

Officers applied pressure to the wound until Parkland Ambulance paramedics arrived on scene and transported the man to hospital for further treatment.

As a result, a 25-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault and breaching a release order.

One woman was arrested and faces charges in relation to an aggravated assault early Monday morning.

Around midnight on May 26, police responded to a report of a stabbing in the 1600 block of 17th Street West.

Upon arrival, officers located a male with injuries consistent with a stabbing; he was transported to hospital by Parkland Ambulance paramedics for further care.

Officers then located the suspect who was arrested without further incident.

Two children were also located at the scene and taken into the care of Mobile Crisis.

Through further investigation, officers learned there had been a physical altercation leading to the stabbing. The suspect and victim were known to each other.

A 22-year-old woman has been charged with aggravated assault.
