PRINCE ALBERT — The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) has revised its provincial fire ban to cover a smaller portion of the province, effective as of 5 p.m. on June 10.
The updated ban now applies only to the area north of the provincial forest boundary up to the Churchill River — the region originally covered by the fire ban announced on May 8.
The ban continues to prohibit the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), along with any open fires, controlled burns and fireworks within the designated boundary. This includes all provincial parks, recreation sites and the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District located in the restricted area.
“Although we have seen improved fire conditions in the far north, it is still critical that residents take every precaution to prevent wildfires,” said Steve Roberts, SPSA vice-president of operations. “The SPSA strongly encourages all residents to do their part to prevent fire starts and for all municipalities to examine the fire risk in their area.”
The SPSA is encouraging all other municipalities, rural municipalities and communities outside the current ban area to assess local conditions and consider implementing consistent fire restrictions to prevent human-caused wildfires.
Anyone who spots a wildfire is asked to call 1-800-667-9660, dial 911 or contact the nearest SPSA Forest Protection Area office.
