Fire damages two homes in Saskatoon’s Evergreen neighbourhood

A late-night fire on Boykowich Bend caused potentially $600K in damage to two homes in Saskatoon; all residents evacuated safely.

SASKATOON — At least two families were affected by a late-evening fire on Sunday, May 11, in the 100 block of Boykowich Bend in the Evergreen neighbourhood. Two houses were involved in the fire, which was reported at 11:16 p.m.

A fire investigator completed a scene examination at approximately 11 a.m. on Monday, May 12, but could not determine the cause due to the extensive fire damage to one of the properties. All occupants were evacuated safely and have now been re-housed.

The fire investigator, however, determined the fire originated around the waste disposal bins, with the house at 135 sustaining the most damage. The flames extended into the property’s exterior and interior, also affecting the neighbouring house.

The house at 135 Boykowich Bend was heavily damaged, and the estimated cost could reach $500,000 due to the fire’s impact on the exterior, said the fire investigator with the Saskatoon Fire Department. The damage to the house at 139 Boykowich Bend could cost $100,000.

On Sunday night, the first arriving firefighters observed smoke and heavy flames emanating from the roofs of both houses, prompting the incident commander to order crews to advance multiple hose lines to begin controlling the blaze.

The fire crews attacked the exteriors of both houses and used an aerial ladder to extinguish the roofs of both structures. It was reported that all occupants of both houses were safely evacuated, with no injuries to civilians or firefighters.
