Another McLurg student signed to U of S athletics team

McLurg High School was celebrating the announcement of another student, Emma Egert, signed by the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Athletics program

WILKIE - The word was officially out on Grade 12 McLurg High School student, Emma Egert, as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies athletics released through their social media that they were announcing the commitment of Emma to the program for the 2023-24 season.

Emma is from Cando, Sask. and attends McLurg High School in Wilkie. She is a sprint and hurdle athlete and is accepted into the College of Agriculture in the fall and will be part of the U of S Huskies track team.

The Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald and SASKTODAY.ca caught up with Emma June 1 and she said, “This is really exciting. The U of S Huskies track had talked to me earlier about this opportunity, and now it has been announced officially.”

As a club track athlete, Emma says it was a dream of hers to run with the Huskies rather than compete against them. With her club track commitment, she trains 11 months of the year and will start with Huskies track athletics in September.

Emma said her and fellow Huskies track athlete and McLurg graduate, Trey Pernitsky, have been buddies since their high school track days and he was very supportive encouraging her to ‘go for it’.

Pernitsky is in his fifth year of eligibility with the Huskies. McLurg has other graduates that have signed with varying divisions of Huskies athletics, most notably Isaiah Mamer who was recently announced as the newest Team Canada volleyball U21 team member.

Emma is appreciative of all the great feedback and support from staff and students at McLurg. She is prepared to compete at her last Sask. High School Athletics Association provincial track and field competition June 1-2 in Saskatoon. From there she will focus on her club track season and her final month as a student at McLurg High School.
