UNITY — Logan Sieben, a 25-year-old man from Macklin, was in Unity’s circuit court on July 21 for sentencing. Sieben, who had been charged and pleaded guilty to arson causing damage, was sentenced to 18 months of probation, 15 months to complete 200 community service hours and is not to possess any fire-starting tools. He will also not have to pay any restitution to the Macklin & District Fire and Rescue.
As Judge Ian William Mokuruk was speaking on the matter, he took into consideration Sieben’s age, a letter of apology from the accused, statements of support for Sieben, and two letters from Sieben’s counsellor. Sieben, who was joined by his family, spoke after hearing his sentence, stating he is “truly sorry and this will never happen again.” Judge Mokuruk did share that Sieben admitted to setting fire to three of the numerous calls the department responded to between July 28 and Aug. 25, 2024.
During the June 16 sitting, Sieben’s lawyer spoke on the accused’s past, saying he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder after the charges had been laid. Because Sieben sought counselling and continues to work with a professional, Judge Mokuruk commended him on taking accountability for his actions.
Sieben, who was a member of the Macklin & District Fire and Rescue at the time, was charged in late August 2024, following a string of hay bale fires in the Macklin area between July 28 to Aug. 25, 2024.
