High school wrestlers aiming for gold at SHSAA provincial championship

McLurg wrestlers have earned appearances at SHSAA provincials every year since 2011, earning three team championships and medaling 21 times over the years.

WILKIE — High school wrestlers are looking to continue their success story at Sask. High School Athletic Association provincials coming up in Regina March 17-18.

Nine wrestling athletes from McLurg and Unity Composite High School will compete at the provincial competition, led by Coach Chris Kent.

The McLurg wrestling program began as a high school sport in 2010. Coach Chris Kent, however, was coaching kids from Macklin to North Battleford in wrestling since 2007 out of the old St. George gym in Wilkie.

“We have appeared at every provincial high school wrestling tournament since 2011,” Kent proudly notes.

The team has won team provincial championship three times and the team’s athletes have medaled at provincials 21 times.

“I am so incredibly proud of the successes of all the young men and women that have come through our program in the last 13 years, but the thing that ‘fills my cup’ the most? All of the Wilkie Broncs wrestlers that are now coaching teams themselves.

“Taylor Hoffman is the head coach of La Ronge now. Celina Risling is head coach at Carlton in PA, Kyra Huber is head coach at Unity, August Baylis is head coach at Martin Collegiate in Regina, Cole Veit is coaching at Johnson in Regina and, of course, my other co-coach Koralie Huber, who is helping here in Wilkie. Most of them are provincial champions themselves.”
